Refrigerant R407F – ideal and energy-efficient
Refrigerant R407F is an HFC refrigerant that is commonly used in low and medium temperature refrigeration systems.
R407F is an ideal and energy-efficient refrigerant with a low GWP that can be used as a replacement in R404A and R407A systems. R22 can also be replaced with R407F after an oil change. However, the GWP of R407F is relatively high at 1825.
R407F is in many ways comparable to R22 but requires fewer equipment modifications than other R22 alternatives (source: bock.de).
Applications and use
R407F is suitable for refrigeration in industrial, commercial and transport applications.

Tewis Smart Solutions International’s controlled laboratory study on the energy consumption of R407F and R404A in medium temperature refrigeration yielded 8% energy savings in favour of R407F. The study involved two 70-hour operating cycles with calibrated equipment using both refrigerants in the same environmental conditions. The opportunity to improve the overall profitability of operations involving refrigeration makes R407F an essential product in the relevant fields.
Key benefits of R407F:
- Reduction of carbon dioxide emissions
The GWP of R407F is roughly 50% lower than that of R404A (3,922) and lower than that of many other refrigerants.
- Savings in energy costs
In research conditions, R407F yielded 8% energy savings compared to R404A. Savings of almost 15% have also been confirmed in other corresponding tests (Honeywell).
- Compatible with current refrigeration systems
The use of R407F in current systems only requires minor modifications.
- Refrigerant generally approved by compressor manufacturers
R407F is a refrigerant that is generally approved by manufacturers of compressors, valves and other refrigeration components. In terms of processing, there are very few differences to R404A.
R407F is fully compatible with the POE lubricants used in R404A systems. In most cases, the original oil can be used. R407F has a lower mass flow than R404A, which means that the compatibility of the piping must be verified. The higher discharge temperature compared to R407F must also be taken into account.
When transitioning from R22 to R407F, the system should be updated by replacing the filter dryer and seals, among other components.
